Yesterday (June 11, 2024), Apple announced AdAttributionKit during WWDC 2024. This new framework promises to revolutionize the way campaign effectiveness is measured on iOS, with a strong emphasis on user privacy. At Coffee Digital, we regularly get questions from clients about iOS attribution tracking. AdAttributionKit offers a robust solution for attribution tracking without the need for traditional tracking methods that can compromise user data.
Important Features and Benefits
- Privacy-Enhancing Attribution: AdAttributionKit allows ad networks to attribute app installs and other conversions without compromising user privacy. The framework doesn't require an AppTrackingTransparency prompt, allowing advertisers to measure campaign effectiveness without explicit user consent for tracking.
- Comprehensive Conversion Tracking: The framework supports up to 64 different conversion events, enabling advertisers to track a wide range of user interactions, such as completing an onboarding tutorial, making an in app purchase, or starting a subscription. This versatility helps advertisers better understand and optimize the quality and impact of their campaigns.
- Re-engagement Measurement: AdAttributionKit supports re-engagement tracking, meaning advertisers can measure when users open their app again after downloading it. This includes postbacks for situations where a user clicks an ad to reopen or redownload the app, offering valuable insight into the effectiveness of re-engagement campaigns.
- Fraud Prevention: All transactions linked to an AdAttributionKit event are cryptographically signed and verified by Apple. This ensures the postback is tied to a legitimate conversion event and includes a unique transaction ID to detect and prevent duplicate valid conversion events.
- Interoperability with SKAdNetwork: AdAttributionKit works seamlessly alongside SKAdNetwork, allowing advertisers to use both frameworks for a more comprehensive, privacy focused approach to attribution tracking. This combination provides a fuller picture of ad campaign performance without compromising user privacy.
How it works
Ad networks need to register with Apple. After the app is installed, AdAttributionKit anonymously passes the conversion to the ad network that won the conversion. Networks that contributed a "view through" also receive a postback.

Conclusion
With AdAttributionKit, Apple is setting a new standard for privacy focused attribution tracking. This framework gives advertisers the tools they need to measure and optimize the effectiveness of their campaigns, while protecting user privacy at the same time.
